The sound was short and cruel, as if something else in the kitchen had been torn. Verónica didn’t scream. She didn’t cry. She stared at the torn dress on the marble floor. Julián murmured, “Mom, enough.” But he said it softly. Weakly. Like someone asking for the music to be turned down, not like a man defending his wife. Doña Elvira felt emboldened by that silence. Don’t make a scene.” She looked at him with a coldness he’d never seen before. “The scene started when your mother destroyed my things in my house.” He gritted his teeth. “She’s my mother. You know how she is.That sentence was like a death sentence. For six years, Verónica had heard the same thing over and over again. When Doña Elvira criticized her work. When she burst in unannounced. When she said a woman with so many extramarital affairs was neglecting her husband. When she insinuated that Julián was the real mastermind behind it all. “You know how she is.” But that morning, Verónica understood something. She knew what her mother-in-law was like.
