The execution chamber was not only silent, but the atmosphere was stifling, like just before a thunderstorm breaks out.
Uncle Ray remained motionless, but the mask he had worn for years was finally beginning to crack. The self-assured man who had once played the role of the grieving brother now looked exhausted, his face dull and his composure fading.
“The boy is disoriented,” Ray said, his voice trembling. “He’s traumatized. He doesn’t know what he’s saying.”
